Solar Energy against hunger and de-forestation

In May 2013 Sustainable Heat & Power Europe GmbH was asked to investigate the possibilities of renewable energy supplies for several towns in the Amhara province in Ethiopia. Ordered by the German NGO “Welthungerhilfe e.V.“ and in partnership with the Ethiopian NGO „Organization for Rehabilitation and Development in Amhara „ (ORDA) the potential for several small hydro installations, as well for solar plants were investigated at site. Result of the pre-feasibility study is the project “Amhara Region Electrification through Rural Solar Hybrid Power Utilization” (Amhara Rush). Core of the project is the installation of 10 PV island grid plants with battery storage which shall supply the needs of several rural growth centres without connection to the national grid. One objective is to increase the livelihood level of the population, e.g. by providing electric power for the treatment and distribution of clean drinking water, or for irrigation purposes. In addition the population shall also prosper through new employment options which are created by the provision of electrical machinery, e.g. for grain mills or metal workshops. Also, the project will have an effect against de-forestation, as solar electricity will replace charcoal in the towns’ kitchens and restaurants. Until End 2013 the European Union will decide, whether they will co-finance the project.

Puerto Errado 2

Since June 2012 Sustainable Heat & Power Europe GmbH is involved in the execution of the solar thermal power plant Puerto Errado 2 located in the province of Murcia/Spain. Here the German high temperature solar collector manufacturer Novatec Solar is constructing the world largest Fresnel collector technology power plant together with a joint venture of the Spanish companies OHL and TSK. The so called CSP (concentrating solar power) plant has a capacity of 30 MW. Owner of this plant is Tubosol, which is mainly owned by various Swiss energy suppliers and utilities. SHP Europe is executing its services under a sub-contract from TÜV Rheinland Energie und Umwelt, which is the Independent Certifier in this project. Our task is to provide the representative of the Independent Certifier. This role is including the witnessing and certification of the various acceptance tests, the evaluation of the execution progress until final hand-over, and especially the mediation and determination between the project parties in case of deviating views about scope, specification and technical approaches. So all parties are benefitting from the decade long experience in the power plant business and CSP technologies SHP Europe is bringing to the project.

New Wind Measurement Station in Vietnam

In October 2012 Sustainable Heat & Power Europe GmbH has installed and commissioned a second wind measurement station for the Vietnamese-American project development company Viet My International Joint Stock Company. The 80m-wind measurement tower has been erected close to the town Phan Rang in Southern Vietnam. Besides of the evaluation of the wind data SHP Europe is also responsible for operation & maintenance of the station and will provide its support to the project development company for the planning of the wind park.

Vietnam is turning green

End of July 2011, Sustainable Heat & Power Europe GmbH has installed and put into service  a combined wind and solar measurement station in Vietnam. The station is located in coastal Binh Tien about 60 km south of Nha Trang. The purpose of the installation is to deliver comprehensive and reliable data for the design of the intended renewable energy supply system for the future InterContinental Beach resort. Project Developer and customer for the measurement station is the Vietnamese Mefrimex group.
